In 2017, I was asked to create an interiors series for Wendy Goodman, the design editor of New York magazine. Instead of going in the direction that many do with interiors videos in digital — i.e., “Cribs”-style production, with fast tilts, pans, and tracking shots with subjects — I sought to put the same deliberation and care into shot composition and lighting with interiors video that went into New York‘s interiors photography.
I hired interiors stylist and photographer Claire Esparros to assist and style. With her help, I quickly learned the painstaking work and attention to detail that goes into interiors imagery (endless amounts of tszujing!).
In slightly over a year, and 17 episodes later, “Interior Lives” went on to not only win multiple awards, but also become New York‘s most highly watched series of all time. For evidence of its traction, try typing NYMag into the YouTube search bar. You’ll find that the top suggested search is “Interior Lives.”
Featured above is my favorite episode, featuring Amy Sedaris, and below you’ll find additional highlights.
